Vietnamese football at a crossroads: learning to read the game by structure, not by emotion

The starting whistle had not yet blown, but the stands of Hang Day Stadium were already heated by transfer stories. On the pitch, players of Hanoi FC and Cong An Hanoi were warming up in the afternoon light. Along the running track sat a group of young players in first-team jackets, silent. They were not in the squad list that day. In a few months, one of them might be loaned out, another might join a First Division club, and another might quietly leave professional football. No one would mention their names on television. Yet those unknown players are the real story of Vietnamese football. In a week full of rumors, from the possibility of Nguyen Quang Hai leaving, Nguyen Tien Linh receiving offers, to foreign striker contracts worth several hundred thousand dollars, supporters can easily be swept away by the transfer market. Newspapers publish photos of players at airports, agents make statements, social media amplifies every whisper. But when the dust settles, the real issue is not a single transfer story. The real issue is structure: how clubs spend money, how they build squads, and whether they are creating a new generation or merely borrowing from the future. This season has exposed a paradox. Some clubs spend heavily in the transfer window, sign established names, then remain dependent on two or three individuals. When a key player gets injured, the team seems to lose its soul. Meanwhile, less glamorous clubs show surprising stability through smart squad rotation and gradual youth integration. In the V.League, I have watched teams dominate possession and still lose because they lacked a centre-back who reads danger, or a striker who knows how to move into the space between defenders. Football is not a game of paper formations. The real problem lies in youth development and talent transition. Academies such as PVF and the NutiFood JMG Academy have created disciplined environments. But there remains a huge gap between academy football and first-team football. Many young players leave academies only to sit on benches for years or be loaned out repeatedly. When they return, they are no longer the same players. Expectations have weighed them down, so they play safe. Thailand, by comparison, does not necessarily have more technically gifted players, but its league is highly competitive and its internal transfer market is lively. Thai clubs are braver in giving young players important matches. At the national-team level, Vietnam has enjoyed glorious moments, but those moments cannot be recreated by desire alone. We must face the numbers: practice hours, competitive matches for young players, fitness programmes, medical care. I have seen a talented young player suffer recurring injuries because his club had no dedicated medical department. He had to rent rehabilitation facilities by himself. No one speaks openly about these fractures in the system, but they are real. Vietnam does not lack talent. What it lacks is connectivity among the different parts. If the first-team coach does not believe in youth development, the academy work is wasted. A European coach once told me: “You teach players how to dribble past three opponents, but not how to move off the ball within fifteen metres.” That sentence has stayed with me for years. During this transfer window, there will be many presentations and confident interviews. Fans have the right to be excited, but I hope they look further. Will a new signing help the club build a sustainable style, or is it just a temporary patch? Top football is like a building: the foundation matters most. If we only decorate the façade, one day everything will collapse. Vietnamese clubs can learn from their own history. Some spent heavily and ended in bitter failure. Others stayed humble, kept a stable core, and became genuine title contenders. Tactics do not exist in a vacuum. They need patience from owners, trust from coaches, and faith from fans. Big clubs are not born from one explosive transfer window; they are shaped by years of work. Media also matters. We often focus on expensive contracts and controversies, but rarely analyse why a team changes style mid-season, why a young player suddenly loses form, or why a club has an abnormally high injury rate. Those stories are less popular, but more important. If media never asks the right questions, fans will remain trapped by superficial narratives. The voice of players is also overlooked. In press conferences, they speak in clichés. In private, they will tell you about harsh training sessions, unclear bonuses, the pressure of expectation, the fear of being cut. These things do not appear in statistics, but they decide whether a team is united or merely exists. A good manager listens to what is not said. Vietnamese football is in a far better position than two decades ago. Stadiums have improved, academies have appeared, and players are starting to move abroad to Japan, South Korea and Europe. But success is not measured by the number of overseas players. It is measured by the depth of the national team and the ability to produce new generations. If today we have one Quang Hai, tomorrow we need ten fifteen-year-old boys working hard to continue his story. Fans may be impatient, but football makers cannot afford to be. A smart transfer window is not one that brings the most stars. It is one in which the club knows what it needs, knows where it is, and knows how to move from point A to point B with low risk. Sometimes patience is a strategy. No one wins a title in a month, but anyone can lose everything after one bad decision. It is time to stop looking for miracles. The miracle of Vietnamese football is not a long-range shot in stoppage time or a last-minute blockbuster signing. It lies in silent morning training sessions, meticulous lesson plans, and a coach patiently giving a youth player another chance after a mistake. If we understand that, Vietnamese pitches will offer more than good matches. They will offer a future.
