Vineyard: The 2009 Russian River Valley Zinfandel was crafted using grapes grown by the Bacigalupi family on one of their highly prized Westside Road vineyards. The Bacigalupi family has been growing grapes for generations, and it shows in the phenomenal quality of this fruit. Guided by Helen Bacigalupi, and farmed by her son, John Bacigalupi, the vineyard is located a few miles south of Healdsburg, just west of the Russian River. The grapes for this wine were grown on a steep, east-facing slope overlooking the river, and are from the DuPratt selection of Zinfandel. The site benefits from the warm growing conditions of the valley’s Middle Reach region, while being protected from over-exposure to late-afternoon sun by the vineyard’s natural terrain.
Vintage: After the challenging year experienced by growers in 2008, the 2009 vintage provided almost ideal growing conditions in the Russian River Valley. The late winter and spring seasons were dry, with warmer than average temperatures, allowing flowering to occur without event and providing good crop set. The growing season was cool and even, with very few heat spikes allowing for extended hang time and flavor development. A very warm end to August pushed the fruit to optimum ripeness and produced grapes with intense aromatics, rich flavors, bright acidity and excellent balance.
Winemaker Notes: The small crop that was harvested from the 2009 growing season produced a head-turning Zinfandel with concentrated fruit flavors and spice. On the nose, this wine offers abundant sweet, dark fruit aromatics accented by cocoa powder and black pepper. The flavors are dark and voluptuous, with layers of blackberry preserves, boysenberry and cassis. On the palate, well-rounded tannins are nicely integrated, providing ample structure, while the wine’s bright acidity supports a very long, fruit-driven finish.
