Vineyard: The 2014 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a blend of three different clones of Pinot Noir from the Martinelli family’s exceptional Ceremonial Vineyard, located in the heart of the Russian River Valley appellation. The wine’s core of classic cherry, wild strawberry and cola aromatics come from the clone 777 and 115, with the Pommard contributing elements of earth, meat and spice.
Vintage: The 2014 vintage proved to be the third in a string of excellent growing seasons in the Russian River Valley. The winter was extremely dry, with less than half of normal rainfall. Dry conditions combined with a mild winter and warm spring, lead to an early bud break and flowering, almost two weeks ahead of normal. The growing season was magnificent, with warm summer days, cool nights and no significant heat spikes. Harvest of the fruit was almost leisurely, with perfect ripening conditions; we were able to let the grapes have plenty of hang time until they achieved optimum flavor development. This was the earliest harvest of my winemaking career, with fruit coming in even earlier than in 2013. The resulting wines are extremely elegant and complex, with an alluring feminine character.
Winemaker Notes: The 2014 Pinot Noir is elegantly complex and feminine; the nose of this wine is a bit reserved, offering subdued layers of Rainier cherry fruit, ripe crushed raspberries, toast and a touch of rose petal. The first taste offers beautifully balanced cherry and raspberry jam notes. On the mid-palate the wine is rich and mouth filling with cherry and cola notes alongside earthy hints of forest floor and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long, balance, mouthwatering and bright, with more cherry flavors.
