When a Football Analysis Returns All N/A – Lessons on Data and Honesty
For 45 years of watching football, I have kept one simple rule: among thousands of numbers, the truth never needs to shout. But this week I encountered an even quieter kind of truth. It was a football analysis report with nine sections, from tactics to finance to dressing-room management. Every section ended with the same verdict: N/A. No xG, no PPDA, no lineups, no club names, no transfer figures. The whole analytical machine refused to speak. For someone who has followed football for decades, that was not a failure of writing. It was a victory of method.
The report explained that the first stage of analysis, the stage that extracts facts from a source article, was empty. Without that stage, there is no foundation for tactical, financial, or structural conclusions. I respect that discipline. Modern football analysis cannot be a guessing game. If you have no data on pressing, no movement maps, no financial details, then every dramatic conclusion is just literature. Literature can be beautiful, but it cannot forecast anything.
The contrarian view is that an all-N/A report is more valuable than a report full of attractive but false conclusions. It draws a clear line between verified information and unverified noise. In a transfer window full of rumours, the most useful gift to readers is a filter built from evidence. If an analyst has no evidence, the professional choice is to wait. Silence is not failure. Silence prevents the spread of junk information.
A blank data sheet reminds us of a season played without spectators. When the stadium is quiet, the real rhythm of a match lives in the charts. Football’s data does not lie; people deceive themselves. If you have no numbers, you have no right to judge. If you have wrong numbers, you should judge even less. An empty map is safer than a wrong map, because an empty map does not send you to a place that does not exist.
