Honda Center: Testing Home Court for USA Volleyball Ahead of the 2028 Olympics

The ice sheet at Honda Center in Anaheim was stripped of its wooden covering for the first time after the 2026-2026 hockey season. Beneath it runs the ductwork that keeps the rink cold year-round. When the Los Angeles 2028 organizing committee's survey team stepped onto the floor in March 2026, the first instrument they switched on was a handheld anemometer. Lighting, seating, egress routes and camera positions were all on the checklist, but none of them came first. That detail says a great deal about how volleyball is preparing for an Olympics on American soil. Honda Center sits roughly fifty kilometres south of downtown Los Angeles, holds more than seventeen thousand seats in its hockey configuration, and is home to the Anaheim Ducks. The arena was built for a sport played on ice. In the summer of 2027 it will be converted to run a full volleyball operations rehearsal for the 2028 Olympics, exactly one year before medals are handed out. After years of watching arenas converted from other sports into volleyball venues, I have learned the hard question is always the same: once the ice is gone, what is left in the airflow. Three recent Olympics used three different kinds of venue. Tokyo 2026 played at Ariake Arena, purpose-built for volleyball. Paris 2026 used South Paris Arena 1, a converted exhibition hall. Los Angeles 2028 chose an ice rink. Each type of conversion leaves its own technical signature, and the one in Anaheim will sit inside the airflow. LA28 placed indoor volleyball in Anaheim rather than downtown Los Angeles. The area hosts the headquarters of USA Volleyball and the American Sports Centers, where both senior national teams train year-round. Logistically, the choice saves most of the cost of a new build. The price is distance. The LA28 Athletes' Village sits on the UCLA campus on the west side of the city. A late match in Anaheim means the team leaves the arena after eleven at night and reaches the village after midnight. No sport outruns a commute. Volleyball is played at a dense rhythm — pool play, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final inside two weeks — so every hour of sleep cut away shows up in the fourth set. Ceiling height is the easiest item to measure. FIVB requires a minimum free space of 12.5 metres above the court for Olympic-level matches. A hockey arena normally clears that threshold comfortably, so the roof is not the hard problem. The hard problem is air movement. A rink's HVAC system is designed to push cold air downward and hold a stable temperature for the ice. Once the ice is insulated and the sport floor laid, that airflow changes direction and creates pockets of low pressure just above the playing surface. For volleyball, that is a tactical variable rather than a housekeeping detail. The float serve — a ball delivered with almost no spin, travelling on a wobbling path — depends entirely on the interaction between ball and air. The same contact and the same force can drop thirty centimetres short or carry half a metre long, depending on which way the air is moving. Teams whose pressure game is built on the float serve will have to recalibrate their parameters. Teams built on heavy spin and jump power serves will be less affected. This is the kind of advantage no box score shows, because it has never had a column. Lighting is the next technical item. A televised volleyball match needs markedly more even illuminance than a hockey game, because the ball travels at eye level and at high frame rates. Modern LED rigs can deliver the level, but they also brighten the floor, and a brighter background changes how a libero reads depth on low defensive balls. Camera positions are a technical matter too. In a dedicated volleyball arena the main camera sits high and slightly offset, giving a clear view of the gap between the two blocks. In a rink, the camera rigs are locked to hockey sightlines, and the LED advertising boards sit closer to the court than usual — the contrast behind the ball changes, something any libero notices in the first set. The playing floor over the ice is a multi-layer system of insulation panels, cushioning and a top mat. Converting from hockey to volleyball normally takes two to three days. The resilience of the underlay decides how the ball comes off the surface when a defender dives. Broadcast windows shape the conditions as well. US television needs the match in East Coast prime time, which in Anaheim means a late-afternoon local start. Indoor temperature and humidity shift between an afternoon and an evening match, and the airflow shifts with them. Then there is qualification. The host quota belongs to the United States in both the men's and women's events. The remaining eleven places in each twelve-team field are allocated through continental championships, Olympic qualifying tournaments and the world ranking. The detailed allocation framework for the 2028 cycle had not been finalised as of the March 2026 survey. That means the Anaheim event tests the venue and the calendar at the same time. A host nation with an automatic berth chooses its friendlies, its training camps and the tournaments it uses to experiment. The other eleven nations have to squeeze through a narrow door a few months earlier. The most questionable assumption in the whole plan is the idea that a rehearsal one year out solves the problem. My own experience runs the other way. One month, 64 matches, and every dead ball written down — a habit formed at a major tournament that followed me into volleyball. What it taught me is that the environment changes athlete behaviour faster than any training plan. When stadiums closed during the pandemic, I pulled data from 120 matches in the J.League and the Bundesliga and found that high pressing became roughly thirty per cent more effective, simply because players could hear each other call. I doubted the 30 per cent figure, so I watched 15 Bayern Munich matches before I believed it. An empty arena does not merely fall silent; it forces tactics to speak. Anaheim will test the same inversion in another form: with seventeen thousand people shouting, noise erases spoken communication and teams must switch to hand signals. Those signals need to be rehearsed in a real arena, with a real crowd. That is why I rate the 2027 event higher than an ordinary friendly but lower than the weight the media is giving it. A rehearsal cannot reproduce the pressure of an Olympic quarter-final, when a set runs thirty minutes and every referee decision is replayed on the big screen. Officiating and video review are the under-discussed blind spot. Long reviews cool the rhythm of a match, and in a large arena the delay between whistle and screen creates a crowd reaction that arrives out of phase. Organisers should be measuring that too. Another blind spot belongs to the teams. A new arena is usually treated as an advantage for the host. The evidence for that claim is thinner than people assume. Before publishing any model, I try to break it first. For the Anaheim home-court hypothesis, the break is simple: the US host team will play on a new floor, in a prime broadcast window, carrying the biggest medal expectation in decades. That pressure appears in no prediction model. If home advantage is a real variable, it has to show up in measurable numbers: direct service points, reception errors in the deciding set, unforced errors in the last two points.
